Kenny Britt Continues His Detailed Demonstration of How to Washout of the NFL
Sports are meant to teach us many things; how to have fun with our friends playing a game, the value of teamwork and hard work, the importance of discipline, the need for structure, time management, sportsmanship, self control--the list could go on and on.
The lessons begin in Pop Warner and little league, but if you are lucky enough to keep playing through high school, college, and into the NFL the opportunity for lessons never stop. In fact, if you are lucky enough to make it to the NFL, not only are you still a student of the game, but you can now be the teacher as well.
Just like Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt has become.
So what can Britt teach us? How to come back from an injury? Some killer rehab exercises? How to have hands like glue? Nope.
From Professor Britt we learn how to lose your job in the NFL in three easy steps (hint--it has something to do with drinking and driving).
Step 1: Be okay
Britt looked hot for two games, but in his first two seasons he was just okay with a total of 84 catches for 1476 yards and 12 touchdowns. That's good enough for a team to keep you around, but not god enough to stop them from looking for your replacement.
Step 2: Get Hurt
A wide receiver must have two things, hands and speed. Since last season Britt has had three surgeries on his knees, including one for his MCL and ACL. Repaired knees have robbed more speed from more players than we can count. The team never said so, but I bet that had to be on the collective mind of the Titans when they drafted Kendall Wright in the first round out of Baylor.
Step 3: Get in Trouble with the Law--a Lot
It can be hard to stop partying when your suddenly a famous pro football player with plenty of cash. However, after getting in trouble a time or two guys are expected to learn a lesson and cool it.
Kenny Britt has not learned that lesson. He proved it recently (July 20)when he got busted driving under the influence on an Army base (Fort Campbell) while bringing a female soldier back. This is arrest #8 for Britt since he entered the league back in 2009.
Review
This could prove to be the final straw for Britt and the Titans. Tennessee needs someone that can play; Britt could very well be suspended for his latest infraction and, even if he wasn't, those repaired knees are a legitimate issue on their own. That means the team is going to have every reason to play Kendall Wright.
Assuming that Wright does well, the team may decided that it doesn't need the PR nightmare that comes with an underachieving receiver with suspect knees. Those two big games from Britt last year, all of a sudden, look like a fluke. It was the quarterback play, not Kenny Britt making those big plays, the thinking will go.
So to review, if you want to lose your job in the NFL, be okay(1), get hurt (2), and get in a lot of trouble with the law (3). Now if only I had a job in the NFL...
