Poor, Poor Santonio Holmes
What is it with bad boy wide receivers lately referring to themselves as ‘examples’ and ‘leaders’ when that is the last thing that they act like? First it was Dez Bryant (go ahead and laugh) now it’s Santonio Holmes.
Holmes could be seen as one if you believe leading by example is enough for a person to be called a leader. You have to admit; no one does a better job of showing guys how not to act than he does. In his latest incident, Holmes showed the younger receivers exactly what not to do in practice.
Insert fake tears here.
The team’s only real veteran receiver (yes, Holmes fits that bill for the Jets) didn’t think he should have to go the 35 reps that he was slated for today so he pulled himself around 20-25. He wasn’t injured; nothing was wrong. He just didn’t want to work that hard (he said so himself):
"I was talking to the coach, letting him understand it was too many reps today," Holmes said. "I've been gone for a while, so I can't be at full tempo like the rest of the guys and where they want us to be at."
So just because he spent some time away on a very worthwhile trip he isn’t in shape enough to go through practice? Don’t these guys train during the off-season in order to stay in shape, or better yet—to get in better shape?
Apparently Holmes doesn’t do enough since his USO trip made it impossible for him to handle 35 non-contact reps in practice. After nearly starting a fight in the huddle last season during a game this is a great way to get back in the good graces of the team.
Maybe the Jets should jettison this guy (pun intended). I hear Batman (Terrell Owens) and Robin (Chad Ochocinco) are looking for work...
(I will give Holmes credit for why he missed a few days. The man was visiting some wounded warriors at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.)
