It’s A Scam: Facebook ‘Verify Your Account’ Request Isn’t Legit
With all the dumb scams that cyber criminals have created on Facebook, we've finally come across one that's a bit smarter in concept but still a fail in execution: the 'All Profiles Must Be Verified' Facebook scam, circa 2012.
It's smarter in the sense that it's using a current issue that created a lot of waves to drive up it's credibility, which, in this case, happens to be the controversial SOPA. Unfortunately, it fails horribly in execution because the scammers forgot to use spell-check and an image editor other than MS Paint. The image above is the result of their efforts: a completely fake-looking verification page.
Despite that, a lot of people are still getting conned into 'verifying' their accounts. So if it isn't obvious enough already, this is a scam and there's no need to verify your accounts after the initial one you'd have to do when you first created your profile.
When the gullible Facebook user bites and hits the 'Click here to verify' button, they will be redirected to a page to complete scam offers and surveys. Leave the page idle and you'll be automatically redirected to the fake verification confirmation page.
The scam spreads by asking those who've been duped to invite their friends to do the same thing. And so, the cycle goes on.
When you see one of these scams or bogus-looking apps, make sure to report them to Facebook right away and warn your friends about them. And remember, if it looks fake, then it probably is, so avoid them at all costs.
