Happy National Doughnut Day!

Today is national doughnut day! It's a happier holiday than Christmas because you don't have to deal with your family. This magical date is dedicated to the delicious fried circles of dough dipped in sugar. Why does the doughnut need a holiday? Especially when you consider the obesity epidemic and the rising amount of people with type 2 diabetes? What are you, a communist? Look, they aren't organic free trade bean sprouts, donuts are not good for you. But so what? Life is hard and there are few pure pleasures in this world. The bite of a doughnut, an orgasm, a glass of scotch, a Cuban cigar, these brief moments of pleasure are the only true fleeting minutes of joy in this world. Doughnuts Aren't As Bad For You As You Think

I see people at Dunkin Donuts all the time making bad choices. A bagel is a wonderful thing but it is not healthier than a glazed doughnut. I hear people say that all the time, "Oh, I'm watching my weight, I'll get the bagel." The average glazed donut has 200 calories while a plain bagel has 400 calories. Get the everything bagel and it goes up to 560! I'm not suggesting you get the chocolate frosted with Bavarian cream filling, just the glazed. Again, neither is good for you but if you want a taste treat at the D&D ask for a glazed.

National Doughnut Day Was Originally For Jesus

The first National Doughnut Day in 1938 and was organized by The Salvation Army. The organization was founded to help wayward souls kick booze and sin and find Jesus. The problem was that people were too busy sinning and getting drunk to care. In 1938 they advertised national doughnut day and offered people free donuts and coffee at their offices. It worked...at least in getting people in the door. The country was still in the grip of the depression and a free cup of coffee and a delicious doughnut sounded pretty good. You had to listen to a dude in a red suit preach at you for a few minutes, but it's a small price to pay.

Doughnut Or Donut?

Which spelling is correct? I've known some pedantic people who've pointed out to me that it is usually misspelled. Not that I care while gnawing on a hot and fresh Krispy Kreme. Doughnut is the correct spelling as it is made of dough and and is shaped like a nut, (like the kind of nut you put a screw into). Over the years the donut spelling became increasingly popular. Merriam-Webster's Dictionary has now changed the spelling from the original doughnut to donut. That means that it's official, right?

It Takes A Doughnut To Feed A Village

The biggest doughnut in history was a classic jelly-filled affair that was 16 feet in diameter and 16 feet high. It weighed a whopping 1.7 tons! That's like an SUV made of fried bread and jelly. It was created by Hemstrought’s Bakeries, Donato’s Bakery and the radio station WKLL FM in Utica, NY. People traveled from all over to devour the gigantic pastry. It's one of the few reasons anyone has ever had to visit Utica.

Doughnut Eating Champion

The record for the most doughnuts eaten is currently held by Eric "Badlands" Booker. He's a hip hop artist but is best known as a really fat guy that eats a lot. He ate a diabetic coma inducing 49 donuts in 8 minutes. Eric's record has stood since 2002, probably because no one in their right mind would attempt to beat him. Booker is a superstar in the "sport" of competitive eating. If eating like a pig and being a fat guy is a sport, then I'm Michael Jordan.
