Best-Selling Video Game Franchise ‘Splinter Cell’ Headed to the Big Screen
Superheroes and video games are especially big in Hollywood these days. The former claim is easily proven, with big-name titles like The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises hitting theaters next month.
As for the later, we've got a number of awesome video game adaptations to look forward to, both in this year and the next. First up, we've got Resident Evil: Retribution which will begin screening on September 14th. A movie entitled Shadow of the Colossus has also been announced for the Colossus game, and another one follows suit for Ubisoft's best-selling video game franchise, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
The game, which was first released last 2002, has gained a huge following and recorded sales of over 22 million as of June 2010.
The game follows protagonist Sam Fisher, a highly-trained black-ops agent who's tasked to carry out a series of missions for the NSA's super-secret (and super fictional) sub-agency, Third Echelon. Splinter Cell has had several sequels, including Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, and Double Agent. The seventh installment of the game, Blacklist, is currently in development and is set for release in Spring 2013.
The Splinter Cell movie is currently looking for a studio to pick it up, but as Deadline reports, it's definitely headed for the big screen and will hit theaters sometime in 2013. Ubisoft has also previously revealed that Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon and Assassin's Creed are also set to be turned into feature films.
