There are certain things that you expect to see out of certain players. Typically it will be your shortstops and outfielders that are more likely to steal bases. These guys are often smaller, faster guys that have the speed and agility to beat the throw.
Now other guys are just as capable of stealing bases; they just don’t do it as often. As of Saturday night (April 14) only five catchers had recorded a stolen base this season (just one). Catchers just don’t steal all that often. One of those five joined the list Friday by recording the first stolen base of his career.
I’m talking about Kelly Shoppach of the Boston Red Sox. At 31 years of age and with 464 professional games under his belt he had never stolen a base (MLB record for longest time to record first steal). After you watch how he goes about attempting his first steal you’ll understand why he has never done it before.
Funny thing is he was actually safe!
