Men, there is still a reason to watch the beach volleyball competition at the Summer Olympics in London this summer. The defending champs, Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor will be wearing bikinis.
Normally that would be the norm, but the International Volleyball Federation recently decided that the skimpy suits that have become the uniform for women over the last decade do not have to be the uniform for women going forward. They now have the option of wearing shorts and sleeved tops instead (perish the thought!).
The reason behind the move was simple. Religious and cultural beliefs in some countries do not allow women to appear in public wearing the skimpy little things that pass as swimsuits. Back in 1999 when the rule was changed to have contestants wear swimwear in competition that precluded many people from having the chance to compete.
Beyond the competitive aspect, there were many that had issue with what was perceived as the sex-ploitation of female athletes. Let’s face it guys. The women that compete in beach volleyball are in tremendous shape. When it comes to choosing something to watch, if it’s between watching babes in bikinis or anything else—we're picking the bikinis.
There will likely be some women that will take advantage of the new rule; one that should have been in place a long time ago. The Olympics are about the world coming together to compete; not just the nations that dig itty bitty bikinis.
However, luckily there will be plenty—like Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor- that will stick with the skimpy little bikinis that we all know and love.
Thank you ladies. Thank you very much.
