Time to Officially Call Matt Leinart an Official NFL Bust, Officially
Matt Leinart is one of the greatest college quarterbacks ever. He just hasn't been able to translate that success into the NFL. After being picked at number 10 in the 2006 draft by the Arizona Cardinals, big things were expected. Leinart has never come close the expectations and now after getting cut by the Houston Texans, he has to be considered an official bust.
Leinart most likely will get picked up by someone, but there's no guarantee he'll be any opening day rosters in September. The former Heisman winner looked like a sure thing when he was guiding USC to national championships and an incredible 37-2 record as a starter. Injuries and inconsistent player have nearly destroyed his NFL rep.
Leinart rubbed people the wrong way when he got to Arizona and seemed more interested in being a party guy instead of an NFL QB. Matt was in line to be the starter, but was soon relegated to clipboard duty as Kurt Warner took over and guided the team to the Super Bowl.
Once the Cardinals hired Ken Whisenhunt, Leinart was pretty much done there. Whisenhunt was never sold on Leinart, and he landed in Houston to backup Matt Schaub. After one year seeing no action, Leinart was named the starter last year after Schaub's bum foot ruled him out. Leinart didn't make it through the first half of his first start, breaking his collarbone.
Now he's looking for a job again. Carroll might be able to get the old Leinart back on top of his game with his rah-rah enthusiasm. Leinart might make people forget the first six years of his NFL career and prove to be a viable QB. He needs a chance, but there might not be anyone willing to give him one.
