‘The Avengers’ has not even reached our multiplexes yet but discussions about the movies inevitable sequel, or most likely sequels, has already begun. Joss Whedon, the films writer and director, has also been clearing up a few questions regarding Loki, ‘The Avengers’ antagonist and the impressive army he has assembled to beat Ironman, The Hulk, Captain America et al.
Talking to Total Film Magazine he said, “It is not the Kree or the Skrulls. Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories. They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars .. The Skrulls – they can shape change. That’s a whole thing. I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow – it’s a real juggling act.”
Sounds like a millionaire complaining about how tight his diamond encrusted shoes are doesn’t he?
Whedon has also talked about how he would approach a sequel to the superhero juggernaut. He explained to SFX magazine, ‘By not trying to [go bigger]. By being smaller. More personal, more painful. By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself.’
Impressive words from the ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ creator, but will he be able to stick to his promises? Well, we only have a couple more weeks to find out. ‘The Avengers’ will be released on May 4 and for those of you who havn’t seen the trailer, shame on you, you can view it here.
